Viral… The Last Dance

sunny.jpgSometimes life catches you by surprise, tosses you around a little bit, and leaves you feeling a little dazed and confused. It’s like being the head coach of the winning football team just moments after the team pours an ice cold cooler of water over your head. At first, the icy chill is a shock, but who cares? You’re still the coach of the winning team. That’s how I feel right now.

It’s been a crazy day and my head is still pounding. After all, I’m now technically unemployed. This morning, I learned my position at Veoh Networks was being eliminated. I would say this came as a complete surprise, but I’m smarter than that. Anyone who’s working in new media knows this is a risky business. New companies are emerging all the time….all claiming to be the best. On their way to the top, these companies are bound to restructure, reorganize and reposition themselves. So, you really can’t fault Veoh. They’re thinking about the overall well-being of their company and their employees, and I respect them for that. In fact, I totally agree with their decision.

The truth is, Viral never quite meshed with Veoh’s overall company objectives. First and foremost, Veoh is a technology company. They are not in the business of creating content and therefore they really don’t have the means to support their own content. If you’re ABC, you would naturally support your own programs like “Lost” and “Desperate Housewives” before you support content from other networks. However, Veoh was unable to do this and, as a result, Viral was not the strong marketing tool it was intended to be- regardless of its potential.

Don’t get me wrong. The situation is not all sunshine and rainbows for me. Being “let go” from a company is always a blow to one’s ego. Quite frankly, it sucks- but it was absolutely necessary.

As for the production team and myself, we have grown so much in the last couple years. Josh, Cody, Kevin and Mark- I absolutely could not have does this without all your support. They’re all extremely talented and I’m extremely blessed to call them my friends and my colleagues. I have no doubt we’ll be working together again when the right opportunity presents itself.

We are definitely on the winning team. And we can’t wait for next season….

New Media Expo: LIVE from Vegas!

If you haven’t registered for the 2008 New Media Expo, then do so now! It’s the premiere event for content creators on the internet. And this year… it’s in Las Vegas! Wow… the geeks are taking over the strip! Now how could you miss that?

I realize most of us don’t have the luxury of sponsorship yet, so if money is tight- no worries. You can get direct flights, really cheap rooms, and the food is reasonable too (because they want you to spend all your money gambling). You can even watch the keynotes and get into the expo for free! The sessions cost money, but there’s some really cool free events happening on the expo floor (Viral is broadcasting live with Ustream.TV), plus some of the best conversations happen in the meet-ups and the casual discussions you have in the halls in between sessions. So, there’s really no excuse. If you’re creating content for the internet, then you can’t afford to NOT be there. Register now!

We recently interviewed Tim Bourquin, founder and organizer of the event, regarding the expo’s history and its new home in Las Vegas!

Good Morning Internet!

From the creators of the viral hit “Hipster Olympics” (a combined 1.3 million views!) comes a web series that looks into happens when your local morning TV news show gets moved to the internet.

Good Morning, Internet! is a manic morning show parody, in five minute weekly blasts. Hosts and correspondents present a wide variety of show segments. And in a similar vein as The Daily Show, Good Morning, Internet! confuses reality by talking to and tackling real people and subjects. From interviews to weather, cooking segments to overly sappy human interest stories, nothing is safe from our hapless hosts.

Here’s a look at their premiere episode…

Night Rider “Kitt” Sells on eBay!

You can find just about anything on eBay… even a talking car. Well, sort of.

The original “Kitt” from the television series Night Rider has just sold for $53,000 on eBay. It took 43 bids for some to ultimately snag this 1984 Pontiac Trans Am beauty.

Unfortunately though, you have better odds of David Hasselhoff making a career comeback than making this car actually talk!

BMW GINA: The Skinless Car

This is crazy! You’ve seen hairless cats, now experience the skinless car. That’s right, BMW recently premiered its GINA Light Visionary Model. This model uses cloth instead of metal to cover the car’s body.

It’s fun to look at- but don’t expect to see this model in your local dealership anytime soon. Right now, it’s an “experimental study” with video released exclusively on the internet.

Experience Google Maps Through Wii

Someone should have forewarned me abut Nintendo’s Wii system. It’s completely addictive- worse than cocaine (although I’ve never tried it- I can imagine). I’m completely obsessed with my little avatar. Isn’t my Mii just adorable?

Well, apparently some students at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (leading German research institute in the field of innovative software technology) have a little too much time on their hands. Either that- or they’re pure genius.

The duo has notified the Nintendo Wii Balance Board to work with Google Maps. Who knew Wii could get any better?

You Can’t Do That On Television…

It’s a news director’s worst nightmare. Your star anchor or reporter making a fool of himself/herself in front of millions of people. While you may be able to keep these mistakes from going live “on-air”, you apparently can’t keep them off Youtube.

News Anchor Set on Fire….

News Reporter Swallows Bug….

The Steven Colbert Puppet Challenge

I know several internet publishers who are trying to get some of the big, television talk shows to notice them- but this may be the most creative effort I’ve seen.

Our friend, Brian Hogg, creator of Dotboom and founder of Hoggworks, is challenging Steven Colbert- well, actually Stephen Colbert’s puppet is making the challenge.

Watch the video to see how you can help Brian (and his puppet) get some national exposure on Comedy Central’s, The Colbert Report.
